AT THE COMPOST FACILITY
Equipment Operator III
The Equipment Operator III is responsible for assisting the Compost Facility Supervisor in coordinating the daily operation of personnel and equipment. Supervises all operations personnel for the Compost Facility in the absence of the Compost Facility Supervisor. Reports to and receives supervision from the Compost Facility Supervisor through regular discussions and consultations. This position is a “safety sensitive” position subject to VPPSA drug testing policies.
Essential Job Functions
- Coordinates composting activities of personnel and equipment with Supervisor on a daily basis.
- Performs and keeps track of maintenance on all equipment, both daily and monthly service.
- Troubleshoots equipment problems with maintenance.
- Operates equipment on site to perform composting activities.
- Performs all duties associated with making, screening, moving, or sales of Compost Facility materials.
- Cleans and repairs equipment, buildings, and grounds as needed.
Additional Job Functions
- Takes temperature and samples of compost to monitor the composting process.
- Orders replacement parts for equipment as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Consolidates computer sales reports and daily deposit in the absence of the Compost Facility supervisor.
Normal work hours are five (5) days per week, forty (40) hours per week. Additional work over forty hours per week is authorized. On-call status is required for emergencies at night and on weekends. Will generally report to work at the Compost Facility. Work will be conducted both outdoors and in a piece of equipment.
Graduation from high school and one year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which demonstrates the required skills, knowledge, and capabilities. Must be able to operate all Compost Facility equipment. Welding and fabrication skills required. Starting salary $22.33 per hour. Application required.

MAINTENANCE MECHANIC I
The Maintenance Mechanic I is responsible for performing and documenting maintenance activities on Transfer System, Convenience Centers, and Drop Off Recycling and Compost Facility vehicles and equipment. Reports to and receives supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor through regular discussions and consultations. This position is a “safety sensitive” position subject to VPPSA drug testing policies.
Essential Job Functions
- Receives requests for maintenance work, inspects vehicles and equipment.
- Performs maintenance and repair work on vehicles, sites and equipment including, but not limited to the following:
- Repair and maintenance of compactors located at transfer stations and convenience centers.
- Repair and maintenance of Roll Off, Front Load and service vehicles including but not limited to regular preventative maintenance, brake jobs, tire mounting and balancing, hydraulic repairs, cable replacement and other routine maintenance and repairs.
- Repair and maintenance of Compost Facility equipment including grinders, screening equipment, wheel loaders and skid steer loaders, working under the direction of the Compost Facility Supervisor
- Routine facility maintenance including plumbing and electrical work.
- Maintains all maintenance facilities in neat and orderly condition.
Normal work hours are five (5) days per week, forty (40) hours per week. Must be available for work from time to time after hours and on weekends. Will normally report to work at the maintenance facility located in Shacklefords, VA. From time to time will report directly to any VPPSA site, as directed. Will report to the Compost Facility located in York County as directed.
Required to use personal tools in the performance of job duties.
Preference given to candidates that possess a valid Virginia commercial driver’s license (Class B) with an air brake endorsement and a Medical Examiners Certification.
Graduation from high school, 5 years maintenance and repair experience, including ability to utilize schematics for electrical and hydraulic repairs, or any combination of training and experience which demonstrates the required skills, knowledge, and capabilities. Starting salary $23.89 per hour. Application required.
ROLL OFF VEHICLE/TRAILER OPERATOR
The Roll-off Vehicle/Trailer Operator is responsible for the safe operation of the roll off vehicle and trailer for the delivery of recyclables to processing facilities and the delivery of solid waste to disposal facilities. Reports to the Transfer System Supervisor. This position is a “safety sensitive” position subject to VPPSA drug testing policies.
Essential Job Functions
- Operates roll-off vehicle with pup trailer delivering recyclables to processing facilities
- Operates roll-off vehicle, delivering solid waste from convenience centers and transfer stations to regional disposal facilities
- Inspects vehicle and trailer before and after operation every day to determine and document condition of the vehicle
- Performs simple preventive maintenance activities on vehicles and containers and notifies supervisor when maintenance or repair is required
- Switches compaction containers at transfer stations and convenience centers when containers are full
- Pulls other containers as required
- Operates roll-off vehicle and trailer, delivering recyclables from convenience centers and transfer stations to processing facilities
- Records vehicle, disposal and other activities using appropriate forms
- Complies with all VPPSA Operating Rules and Procedures
Normal work hours are four (4) days per week, forty (40) hours per week. Works a rotating seven (7) day work schedule including weekends and some holidays. Will generally report to work at the Middle Peninsula Field Office.
Work includes delivery of solid waste to sanitary landfills.
Graduation from high school or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in the operation of a roll-off vehicle with pup trailer, tractor trailer, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the required skills, knowledge, and capabilities. Starting salary $21.66 per hour. Application required.
WAE ROLL-OFF VEHICLE OPERATOR
WAE (Work As Employed) position with the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA) Middle Peninsula Solid Waste System. Roll-Off Truck Driver-for waste transport to regional landfill. Good driving record and Class B Commercial Driver’s License with at least one year experience, current Medical Card and Air Brake endorsement required. Must provide a current copy of driving record. Will work on an as needed schedule and generally report to VPPSA Middle Peninsula Field Office. Starting salary $21.23 per hour. Application required.
ATTENDANTS
To assist residents with solid waste and recycling needs at Middle Peninsula sites. Attendants will also participate in Household Chemical events.
Positive attitude, good public relations skills, and willing and able to travel to locations in King William, King & Queen, Essex, Middlesex and Mathews counties. Requires high school graduation or equivalent combination of training and experience which demonstrates the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license. Attendants starting salary $14.60 per hour. Application required.
