AT THE COMPOST FACILITY
Equipment Operator I-II-III
Equipment Opeartor I: The Equipment Operator I is responsible for the operation and performing daily maintenance of the skid steer loader and other small equipment at the Compost Facility. Work involves assisting users of the site and maintaining the site and buildings in a neat and safe condition. This position is a “safety sensitive” position subject to VPPSA drug testing policies. EFFECTIVE JULY 1ST: Starting salary $19.11 per hour DOQ. Application required.
Equipment Operator II: The Equipment Operator II is responsible for the operation and performing daily maintenance of all equipment at the Compost Facility. Provides support to any Senior Equipment Operator. This position is a “safety sensitive” position subject to VPPSA drug testing policies. EFFECTIVE JULY 1ST: Starting salary $21.23 per hour DOQ. Equipment Operator III: The Equipment Operator III is responsible for assisting the Compost Facility Supervisor and Lead Operator in coordinating the daily operation of personnel and equipment. Supervises all operations personnel for the Compost Facility in the absence of the Compost Facility Supervisor and Lead Operator. This position is a “safety sensitive” position subject to VPPSA drug testing policies. EFFECTIVE JULY 1ST: Starting salary $23.59 per hour DOQ. Application required.
Normal work hours are five (5) days per week, forty (40) hours per week. Additional work over forty hours per week is authorized. On-call status is required for emergencies at night and on weekends. Will generally report to work at the Compost Facility. Work will be conducted both outdoors and in a piece of equipment.
For all positions, graduation from high school and one year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which demonstrates the required skills, knowledge, and capabilities.
ON THE MIDDLE PENINSULA

ASSISTANT TRANSFER SYSTEM SUPERVISOR
The Assistant Transfer System Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Transfer System Supervisor in coordinating the daily operations of the transfer stations, convenience centers, and the hauling of solid waste and recyclables to regional disposal facilities and processing sites. Supervises attendants for the transfer stations and convenience centers and drivers along with the Transfer System Supervisor. Assists with special events and household chemical collections as needed. Reports to and receives supervision from the Transfer System Supervisor through regular discussions and consultations. This position is a “safety sensitive” position subject to VPPSA drug testing policies. Starting salary is $67,232.40 or DOQ.
Essential Job Functions
• Assists in training, motivating, supervising, disciplining, and evaluating transfer system and convenience center employees as well as drivers in accordance with the adopted Personnel Policies and Procedures
• Coordinates solid waste disposal activities by citizens, communities, and other users of the sites
• Coordinates hauling of solid waste from transfer stations and convenience centers to regional disposal facilities
• Prepares work schedules and compiles time sheets for transfer system and convenience center employees
• Coordinates the general upkeep and appearance of buildings and grounds for all transfer stations and convenience centers
• Performs annual site assessments of transfer stations and convenience centers to address safety concerns and evaluate equipment needs
• Enforces standard operating and safety policies and procedures
• Coordinates recycling activities at the transfer stations and convenience centers
• Prepares, reviews, and compiles necessary records to document site operations, maintenance, and hauling activities
• Assists with coordinating and supervising special waste and recycling collection events
• Operates roll-off vehicles: roll-off, front-end loader, mixed paper trailer, support vehicles, snowplow vehicles, and other vehicles as assigned
• Serves as Transfer System Supervisor in the absence of the Supervisor
Classification
The Assistant Transfer System Supervisor position is a regular full-time salaried position.
Work Conditions
Normal work hours are five (5) days per week, forty (40) hours per week. Additional work over 40 hours per week is expected. Will remain “on call” for special circumstances at night, weekends, and on holidays. Will normally report to work on the Middle Peninsula.
Education, Training, and Experience
Graduation from an accredited College or University with one (1) year of solid waste management and supervisory experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which demonstrates the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift in excess of 75 pounds occasionally and in excess of 50 pounds frequently to move objects. Must be able to operate a roll-off vehicle.
Special Requirements
Must possess, or VPPSA trained and obtain within 6 months of hire date, a valid Virginia commercial driver’s license (Class B) with an air brake endorsement and a Medical Examiners Certification. Must have and maintain a good driving record.
TRANSFER SYSTEM DRIVER I – Full Time and WAE (Work as Employeed)
The Transfer System Driver I is responsible for the safe operation of the roll off vehicle and delivery of solid waste to the regional disposal facilities and the delivery of recyclables to processing facilities. Reports to the Transfer System Supervisor. This position is a “safety sensitive” position subject to VPPSA drug testing policies. Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (class B) with an air brake endorsement and a valid Medical Examiner’s Certification. Must have and maintain a good driving record. Must provide a current copy of driving record. Normal work hours are four (4) days per week, forty (40) hours per week. Works a rotating seven (7) day work schedule including weekends and some holidays. Will generally report to work at the Middle Peninsula Field Office located in Shacklefords, VA. EFFECTIVE JULY 1ST: Starting salary $23.25 per hour DOQ. Application required.
ATTENDANTS
To assist residents with solid waste and recycling needs at Middle Peninsula sites. Attendants will also participate in Household Chemical events.
Positive attitude, good public relations skills, and willing and able to travel to locations in King William, King & Queen, Essex, Middlesex and Mathews counties. Requires high school graduation or equivalent combination of training and experience which demonstrates the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license. EFFECTIVE JULY 1ST: Starting salary $16.61 per hour. Application required.
