VPPSA Services

Services are made available to members and the governing body of each member makes the decision to participate in any service. Member cities and counties pay only for the services they select to use.

Household Chemical Collections

VPPSA holds a total of 17 household chemical collection events per year across the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula. We accept a variety of paints, fuels, solvents, pesticides, automotive products and other chemicals from all of our member communities. All collections are open to the residents of all of our member communities. Proof of residency may be required.

Acceptable Materials are those typically found in a home environment, and include products such as the following:

Household Maintenance: Oil paint, Latex paint, Stains, Solvents, Glue, Varnishes, Adhesives

Automotive: Gasoline and other fuels (less than 20 gallons), Waxes, Gas/oil mixtures, Brake fluid, Engine cleaner (Motor oil and antifreeze are ONLY accepted at events held in the City of Hampton. For options in other communities, please click on the arrow next to “Localities Info” at the top of the page. Then click on the “+” sign next to “Counties” or “Cities” under “Household Chemical Collections & Computer Recycling Locations” for more information.)

Lawn & Garden: Insecticides, Weed killers, Pesticides. Fertilizers, Pest Strips

Household Cleaning: Oven cleaners, Drain cleaners, Floor waxes and cleaners, Metal polishes or jewelry cleaners, Bleach, Degreasers, Septic tank cleaners, toilet cleaners

Miscellaneous: Charcoal fluids, Dyes, Kerosene, Swimming pool chemicals, Photo finishing chemicals, Rechargeable Batteries, Fluorescent Light Bulbs (including CFL’s)

Propane Cylinders: 1 and 20 pound cylinders only; limits apply per vehicle per event (Peninsula residents – please confirm your limits on the Peninsula event schedule; Middle Peninsula – please confirm your limits on the Middle Peninsula event schedule)

Unacceptable Materials

  • TVs
  • Alkaline Batteries
  • Medications
  • Business or Medical Waste
  • Explosives
  • Shock sensitive materials
  • Radioactive products
  • Large quantities of unknown materials
  • Ammunition
  • Gun Powder
  • Household Trash
  • Large drums of material

What to do with Latex Paint

  • If the paint is old and dry, you can leave the lid off and dispose of in your regular trash.
  • If the paint is still a liquid, you can add kitty litter or other absorbent material such as sawdust or mulch, and stir it well until it becomes very thick and will not drip or run. Once you’ve done this, you can leave the lid off and dispose of it in your regular trash. Please note: this ONLY APPLIES to latex (water based) paint.

Computer-related items accepted for recycling are limited to the following

  • Desktop and laptop computers
  • Servers
  • Monitors (both LCD and CRT types)
  • Computer wiring
  • Desktop printers including multi function printers, or “all in ones”
  • Fax machines
  • Desktop photocopiers and scanners
  • Cell phones

Computer Recycling of Virginia (CRVA) has served as the computer equipment recycling contractor since 2001. Data contained in hard drives is destroyed as follows:

  • For equipment that may be resold or donated, data is wiped using software that is NIST 800-88 compliant. CRVA provides a “triple pass,” zero fill of the hard drives.
  • For all other equipment, the hard drive is physically dismantled and/or shredded.

Residents and businesses in the Counties of Essex, King & Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex receive a full range of solid waste services. The system includes four transfer stations and 15 convenience centers located throughout the five county region. Commercial cardboard and mixed paper recycling is available in our Member Communities on the Middle Peninsula.

Service Highlights for Cardboard Recycling:

  • 8 cubic yard container provided (Call for exact can dimensions)
  • Providing service on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
  • Multiple containers available
  • Seasonal changes OK
  • Lockable containers available for an additional one time fee, lock not provided
  • $25 per month, invoiced quarterly in advance

Service Highlights for Mixed Paper Recycling:

  • 95 gallon wheeled cart(s) provided
  • Providing service the first full week of each month
  • Multiple carts available if needed
  • Seasonal changes OK
  • $5 per month, invoiced in advance every 6 months
